| WHAT IS BSL? |

BSL, also known as breed-specific legislation, is a law or ordinance passed by a legislative body pertaining to a specific breed or breeds of domesticated animals. In practice, it generally refers to laws or ordinances pertaining to a specific dog breed or breeds. - @Wikipedia

Featuring March's !RARE! Breed of the Month
the Porcelaine / Chien de Franche-Comté

What is a Porcelaine?

The Porcelaine is a very old breed of dog originating from France, believed to be the oldest of the French scenthounds; its alternate name is Chien de Franche Comté, named after a French region bordering Switzerland. The breed is believed to have descended from Montaimboeuf (now extinct), English Harrier and some of the smaller Laufhounds of Switzerland. Porcelaines are energetic and friendly dogs usually used to hunt hare, roe deer, and in the north wild boar, and hunt in packs. Being a scent hound, it has a very good sense of smell with which it hunts. The Porcelaine is a fierce hunting dog that has been bred to hunt independently without many orders from the owner. The Porcelaine is also being bred in small numbers in Italy and used to hunt wild boar, however Italian indigenous hounds continue to be the preferred choice of local hunters. The breed gets its name from its shiny coat, said to make it resemble a porcelain statuette.

History & Origin

After the French Revolution, Porcelaine breed dogs became almost extinct. Only a few specimens of the breed were found at the region bordering France and Switzerland. This, however, invoked a debate over the origin of Porcelaine dog breed. Finally, the breed was recreated and classified as a French breed.
Porcelaine is also known as Chien de Franche-Comté, derived from the name of a former French region bordering Switzerland. Efforts by the Porcelaine Club, that was founded in 1971 helped a great deal in reviving this breed of dogs from near extinction.

Appearance

As the name suggests, these dogs are characterized by a smooth and shiny hair coat. Their skin is white and has black mottling that is often visible through the hair coat. Head is finely chiseled with flat forehead. Ears are long, thin, and droopy and pointed at the tip.

Eyes are dark in color and bear a sweet expression. Nose is black in color and consists of broad nostrils. Neck is fairly long and chest is moderately wide. Earlier, these dogs were comparatively larger in size as compared to the present day Porcelaines.

The average height of these dogs is generally 22 to 23 inches. Bitches tend to be a bit smaller, that is 21 to 22 inches. The ideal weight of both male as well as female Porcelaines ranges between 55 to 62 pounds.

Temperament

Porcelaine temperament is cheerful, enthusiastic, quick, courageous and sociable. These vigorous dogs are fierce while hunting but calm at home. Hence, they are relatively easy to handle and make good family dogs.

These dogs have a pleasant disposition and a melodious bark.
They are usually good with people, even strangers. Moreover, they can co exist peacefully with other dogs because they were initially meant for pack hunting. However, as these dogs were originally bred to hunt independently without taking commands from their owners, training a Porcelaine can be quite a challenge.

Featuring Febuary's Targeted Breed of the Month
the American Bulldog

The American Bulldog is a breed often subject to breed-specific legislation and other forms of discrimination, the breed is banned in Bermuda, Denmark, Lithuania, Malaysia, Singapore, and is either restricted or banned in several cities across the United States. The American Bulldog is often referred to as a "pit bull" type dog by legislators, and falls under the "pit bull" category when included in a dangerous dog law or breed ban.

The American Bulldog is a breed of working dog that was developed in the United States. There are generally considered to be three types of American Bulldog: the Bully or Classic type (sometimes called the Johnson type ), the Standard or Performance type (also called the Scott type), and the Hybrid type (a cross between the Johnson & Scott types). The different types of the American Bulldog can be better understood by reading the America Bulldog's History in the United States @ wikipedia.com

This dog look familiar? You may recognize this breed as being featured in the 1993 Disney film Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey & its 1996 sequel Homeward Bound II: Lost in San Francisco as the character Chance!

In the 1994 film The Little Rascals, an American Bulldog played the role of Petey; not to be confused with the Pete the Pup character in Hal Roach's Our Gang who was played by various American Pit Bull Terriers but most notably, a UKC registered APBT named Lucenay's Peter. An American Bulldog was also featured in the films Cheaper by the Dozen and The Number 23.

Quick Facts:
• Country of Origin: United States
• Functionality: Family guardian & farm utility dog
• Coat Colors: Solid or varying degrees of white, all shades of brindle, brown, red, or tan are acceptable. Solid black, black and tan, and/or any degree of merle is unacceptable. A full black mask is not preferred.
• Height: Dogs – 22 to 28 inches & Bitches – 20 to 26 inches

The Most Stereotyped Breed of Them All

© Written by ~glassreflections

It's the breed that most people shy away from when they see it at a dog park or on the street. It's the breed that when most people hear of it, they immediately assume the worst. This breed, also known as the American Pit Bull Terrier is the victim of human cruelty in the form of physical torture, as well as the mental stereotyping that brands them as a vicious breed. Today, pit bulls are also the most common dog found in shelters and the one most rescue groups respond to. The reason this dog is now a victim is due to the sick hobby of dog fighting, an underground sport thrown into the spotlight by Michael Vick, a football player who raised pit bulls for fighting.

Pit bulls were first bred in the 1800s as bull-baiters, as well as bear-baiters. However, once those activities became illegal in the 1830s, dog fighting soon reared its ugly head and has been an underground sport ever since, used for entertainment and money-making purposes.

Dog fighting is the atrocious blood sport of matching two dogs together in a pit that is 14 to 20 square feet until either one of the dogs is dead, or both are exhausted and can't fight any longer. The loser, due to the fact that it is an "embarrassment" to its owners, is usually killed by one of many brutal methods. Either that, or its wounds are just left untreated. Between matches, fighting dogs are kept isolated from other dogs, so they spend most of their lives on short, heavy chains, often just out of reach of other dogs. They are usually not socialized to other dogs or to most people. Sometimes, dogs are also injected with drugs to help with pain or to make them more aggressive.

This brutal activity is broken into three levels: (1) the street dog fights, which aren't "organized" fights and are usually started by taunts from one street gang to the another. These gangs lack respect for the fighting dogs, often beating them to promote aggression. On this level, money, drugs or bragging rights are the main prize. (2) The hobby fighters are more organized, usually with one or more dogs that participate in numerous organized fights during the year, either for entertainment purposes or to increase income. (3) The third and last level, the professional dog fighters, own large numbers of dogs and supplement their income by breeding, selling and fighting dogs at a central location. They pay attention to promoting particular winning bloodlines and the long-term conditioning of animals. If the dog owner has a dog that is too human-aggressive for the "pit", the dog is usually sold to street fighters or to other people looking for an aggressive dog, which contributes to the number of aggressive dogs on the street and the potential for dog-bite victims.

Dog fighting, as of 2008, is a felony in all 50 states, as well as in the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S Virgin Islands.  Dogs which are rescued from dog fighting rings are brought to shelters to be professionally evaluated. Some are lucky enough to be retrained and socialized, while others have a less fortunate fate and end up having to be euthanized.

After reading the above overview of dog fighting, one might now understand why this breed has gained such a bad reputation among the (uneducated) public. I say uneducated because people rarely take time to stop and learn more about the breed. The breed is actually very compassionate, sweet, loving, and obedient, even capable of being a service dog. These dogs can be affectionate with humans, and even with other animals, dogs and cats alike.

For each media story of kids or adults being bitten or attacked by a pit bull, you can trace the reason back to either one of two reasons. One, the dog has a handler who clearly has not properly trained or socialized his or her dog and/or doesn't know how to deal with that kind of breed.  Or two, the person bitten was at fault. In the case of a kid (or even an adult) getting bitten, either the kid was unsupervised, tried to play with the dog and grabbed it too hard or in the wrong way, hurting the dog and causing it to bite. An adult, acting just as stupidly, doesn't read the body language of the dog, tries to pet it when it clearly doesn't want to be petted, and ends up getting bitten. In the second case, the dog can possibly be seized from the owner, who probably has done nothing wrong, or the owner can be tacked with a hefty fine or lawsuit due to the injury. But either way, both are caused by human error, not by the dog, who was just being exactly what it is: a dog.

I have personally worked with Save The Pets, an organization dedicated to saving dogs and cats, but most of the cases I've encountered usually involve sweet, loving pit bulls looking for a home. These are dogs just begging for attention and love from humans, and will do just about anything for a treat. But a lot of people still look at them and see only vicious dogs ready to bite the hand that feeds them. Come on, people! Give them a chance! I have never once met an aggressive pit bull in my life. The only threat from them is the possibility of getting your face licked off. Oh, my God! Everyone run! It's a pit bull that will LOVE you to death!

I hope that one day people will see the pit bull for what the dog really is: an obedient, smart dog who is also loving, gentle and loyal, who even has the potential to be a service dog, and stop with this ridiculous, uneducated habit of stereotyping the breed on sight. It shows the cowardice and lack of education about dog breeds people really have, or else they'd avoid Chihuahuas with big-dog complexes and look for the love found in the heart of a pit bull waiting at their nearest local shelter.

Meet Roscoe. He was found abandoned by my older brother in a junkyard living in a scrapped out car and eating any bug or small mammal he could find. He is approximately 2 months old in this photo and was about 1 month old when my brother found and rescued him. He was very thin and had hair missing from his backside and legs. After some researching online, we've come to the conclusion that he is half Plott Hound and has a dash of Shar Pei that is evident of as he ages as he has the most adorable wrinkles on his face!

Love Bug is at The South Coast Humane Society and is available for adoption. Her caption in last weekend's "Adopt-a-Pet" section of the newspaper says:
I'm a pretty and sweet long-haired tortie girl. I have a super friendly personality, and I love everyone. I like other cats, and dogs, and kids, too.

It's time for Love Bug to be loved by a permanent family.
